A Eulogy for My Old Drill Sergeant

January 23, 2010 on 4:59 am | By | In Reference | Comments Off

I only knew him as a cranky old drill sergeant. I tried to avoid him as much as possible, not wanting to get on his bad side. I honestly couldn’t imagine anyone wanting to spend time with him unless he had to. Then I went to his funeral. I couldn’t believe the number of people who had turned out to say goodbye. I watched the family shed tears of grief, and I listened to a heartfelt eulogy from his son. This was much more than just a drill sergeant. This was a warm caring family man and friend. I’m sorry I never knew who he really was until it was too late.
