My experience in the court system tells me that the person who goes to any kind of proceeding with no lawyer is in a risky situation. There are rights that you have and that are respected by the court, but the whole situation is so confusing for the unrepresented party that they cannot possibly grasp what is going on around them without someone experienced there to guide their way through the process.
