Called the Herxheimer reaction, this occurs when large numbers of yeast cells die in a short time and the toxic by-products set up further immune reactions. This die-off is really a good sign, but it must be controlled. I do this by starting with a small dose of nystatin (let’s say, 500,000 units) and gradually build up to 4 million to 8 million units. Nystatin has the further property of not being absorbed systemically from the intestinal tract. This means it will act specifically only within that area and will not cause systemic reactions and cause of acai side effects.
